Bhama Biography
Bhama is a well known Malayalam actress who began her career with the 2007 super hit ‘Nivedyam’. Bhama has also appeared in one Tamil film ‘Ellam Avan Seyyal’. Bhama was born as Rekhita in 1988 in Manarkadu near Kottayam. Her father is late Rajendra Kurup and her mother is a housewife; she has an elder and a younger sister.

Bhama made her acting debut in the Malayalam matrimonial television show ‘Thaali’. Notable filmmaker A K Lothidas noticed her and approached her for his film ‘Nivedyam’. However she was hesitant as she had never considered acting as a full time profession. On the insistence by Lothidas, she went for the audition and was chosen to play the female lead in Malayalam film ‘Nivedyam’ opposite Vinu Mohan. The film became a success and Bhama was appreciated for her performance.
For her brilliant portrayal of Satyabhama in ‘Nivedyam’, Bhama won several awards including Best Star Pair Award at the Asianet Film Awards, Best Newcomer at the Sathyan Memorial Film Awards, Film Critics’ Awards, ALA Awards and Vanitha Nippon Awards.
Bhama’s second film was the 2007 release Malayalam film ‘Hareendran Oru Nishkalankan’ alongside Jayasurya, Indrajith and Sherin. Written by Vishal Vinayan, the film was based on one of his comics and was directed by Vinayan. Her next hit film ‘Cycle’ was released in early 2008 and starred Vineeth Sreenivasan, Vinu Mohan, Bhama and Sandhya in pivotal roles. Directed by Johny Antony, ‘Cycle’ was a story revolving around two friends played by Vineeth Sreenivasan and Vinu Mohan. Bhama received the Best Screen Pair at the Amma Awards, Dubai in the year 2008 for ‘Cycle’.
Besides Malayalam films, Bhama also became popular in Tamil films and was approached by many reputed filmmakers. However she refused these offers as she wanted to concentrate on Malayalam films. Though she appeared in one Tamil film titled ‘Ellam Avan Seyyal’ owing to its interesting storyline. ‘Ellam Avan Seyal’ directed by Shaji Kailas starred Tamil actors like R. K. , Ashish Vidyarthi, Raghuvaran, Bhama, Manivannan, Visu and Vadivelu in significant roles.
After appearing in a Tamil film, Bhama returned to Malayalam cinema and starred alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mammootty in reasonably successful Malayalam film ‘One Way Ticket’ directed by Bipin Prabhakar. Bhama played the female lead opposite Dileep in Raj Babu’s ‘Colours’, a Malayalam film released in the year 2009.
Bhama gave the blockbuster superhit Malayalam film ‘Ivar Vivahitharayal’ directed by Saji Surendaran. ‘Ivar Vivahitharayal’ starred Jayasurya, Bhama and Samyurtha Sunil in lead roles. The film was the directorial debut of popular TV serial director Saji Surendaran. Bhama won the Best Screen pair Award for third time at the Mathrubhumi and Amritha Awards. Bhama was recently seen in another Malayalam hit ‘Oru Black And White Kudumbam’ alongside Kalabhavan Mani and Jayasurya. The film was directed by Shaiju Anthikkad and produced by M Mani.
Bhama is currently working on three Malayalam projects – ‘Neelambari’, ‘Swapnangalil Haisal Mary’ and ‘Gilafat’. While ‘Neelambari’ is in production stage, the other two films are being shot and are slated to release by the end of this year.
